Fitness In Los Angeles
Los Angeles is a city that attracts people from all over the world. Everyone seems to have this idea that no one was ever born in Los Angeles and that it is filled with people who have moved here to “make it” in one endeavor or another. Well for one, I was born in Los Angeles, and I know plenty of other people that were born here as well. So they do exist! It is a great city with such diversity in terms of people, food, terrain, culture of life, etc. One of the aspects of life that makes Los Angeles stand out is the Hollywood scene and the desire to look like so and so celebrity. With the desire to reach or maintain a certain look comes the incentive to exercise and maintain a certain standard of eating. While this obsession can sometimes turn unhealthy and tends to go over my head, anything that gets us off our sedentary asses and moving is a good thing.
The state of exercise in Los Angeles is what I am going to discuss today, but only briefly. There are so many ways to get in exercise in Los Angeles:
1. recreational sports- basketball, soccer, softball, beach volleyball etc.
2. jogging/cycling/mountain biking- great trails in Santa Monica mountains
3. regular gym usually LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, or Equinox (Gold’s Gym for some and of course Sports Club LA)
4. Specialized gym- emphasizing anything from spinning, pilates, and yoga to martial arts
5. Crossfit
6. Bootcamps- so many of them now its amazing
I personally think everyone should have a nice mix of workouts in their exercise schedule. Most of the methods listed above are rather limited. My opinion is that the long duration cardio can go and the strength training needs to increase for most people. Crossfit is awesome but the movements are limited and that can lead to injuries and boredom. There is no reaction time, lateral movement, speed work, or skill in Crossfit and I understand for some folks, that is just fine.
At SportfitLA we really try to capture it all. We use different sports as themes to base our workouts on. It is not uncommon to find people actually engaged in sport. Playing the sport is not the focus of SportfitLA, it is the physiological development and performance. People are losing body fat, gaining muscle, and developing a winning mindset about their health and their bodies. While Crossfit does a great job combining gymnastics, long distance running, Olympic Weightlifting, SportfitLA uses all of the above and more to keep things interesting and produce amazing results. What you wont find at SportfitLA is repeating the same workouts and movements over and over. If that sounds good, come try a free session. If not, I wont be seeing you in Spinning class.Â
